Abstract

The COMICS is a cooled mid-infrared camera and spectrometer designed for the Subaru telescope. It is contrived to cover the entire 8 - 13 μm spectral region with a spectral resolution of either 10 (imaging mode), 1500 (nominal spectroscopy mode) or higher (≡20000; optional). It is designed to achieve a diffraction-limited spatial resolution at 8 μm (≡0″2). The COMICS is expected to provide significant measurements for a wide variety of astrophysical objects. In particular, the COMICS will be most efficient in the spectroscopic study of remote galaxies. The current design and expected performance of the COMICS are presented along with the scientific capabilities.
